Benjamin House’s annual talent competition available online Saturday | Local News

The residents of Benjamin House have cooked up something more for this year’s talent show.

This Saturday marks the second year in a row that the Benjamin House has held its online talent show due to COVID-19. The theme of this year’s show is “Fun, Friends and Family”. The show is scheduled to run for around 40 minutes and will go live on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.

Past shows have always featured residents of Benjamin House performing singing and dancing routines, said Ann Hughes, who, along with her husband Lennie, founded the Residence for Mentally Handicapped Adults. The couple created Benjamin House several years ago to make sure their son Benjamin, who has autism, has a place to live after they leave.

In addition to singing and dancing, this year’s show will feature residents sharing their favorite recipes.

“Part of our talent show is cooking,” said Hughes.

Over the past year and a half, residents have not been able to spend as much time in the community, such as taking trips to Walmart, due to concerns over COVID-19. Although they participate in many outdoor activities at the Benjamin House, one indoor activity that residents have started to enjoy is cooking, Hughes explained.

The idea of ​​integrating cooking into the talent show arose from the culinary knowledge that the residents acquired. Plus, they love to watch cooking shows on TV, Hughes said. It was then that a member of staff suggested that residents do their own cooking show.

“That kind of sparked the idea,” Hughes said.

Part of the residents’ learning process included finding recipes on their laptops, which each of the six residents received, and choosing a dish. With the help of a staff member, the residents made a list of the ingredients they needed and the staff went shopping.

Hughes said residents’ lives have changed because of the pandemic. The “fabulous staff” worked hard to find ways to keep the residents occupied, as their movement outside the home was limited. Residents are allowed to leave to visit family, Hughes said. When they return from a family visit, they must wear their mask for 10 days. They are not required to wear their masks when in their individual private rooms.

The Benjamin House held a COVID-19 vaccination clinic and all residents and staff were vaccinated, Hughes said.

This year’s show is expected to be around 40 minutes long and will again feature Reverend Toni Wood as the mistress of ceremonies.

Brooke Nathanson, 13, and her grandmother Carol Weiss, 75, faced a dozen other pairs from across the country on the Peacock Network show. The two were sent home after Brooke started to feel bad during the third episode aired Thursday.

Kamara’s winning entry on “Clash of the Cones” was “Bia’s Black Joy Sundae”, consisting of malty salty Dulce de Leche, vanilla with dark chocolate brownie chunks, blondie brownie chunks and “caramel d ‘seafood seasoning,’ according to the Food Network blog. .

Kamara explained on Wednesday that the flavor was meant to represent her identity, both as a person of color and as a Marylander.

“Growing up as a black person in this country, I experienced a lot of joy, but also a lot of pain because of the way this country was set up so that we weren’t necessarily successful. So a big part of the reason I make ice cream is to make sweet memories through sweet treats, but it’s especially important that people who look like me can experience a few moments of joy and peace with the ice cream, ”she said.

The Old Bay flavored caramel represented the Maryland aspect of the sundae, Kamara said.

The winning ice cream entrepreneur believes there is something about dessert that is universally part of the human experience.

“Ice cream is forever and we get hooked on it from a young age,” she said.

Bakery Owner Tyler Attends Disney + Cooking Show | Business

Dylan Humphrey, 27, of Whitehouse, and owner of Kool Kakes by Dylan is once again in a cooking show contest, but this time for Disney +.

The show is one of the first Disney + cooking shows on the streaming platform and will be hosted by actress Keke Palmer, who is also the show’s executive producer.

“Foodtastic” is a series that follows different contestants in each episode. Throughout eight different one-hour episodes, competitors compete in groups of three against two other groups. Each of these three groups are challenged to take Disney-inspired artwork, such as characters, and turn them into sculptures made of food. Of these three groups, a winner is announced at the end, and the other two are eliminated.

Humphrey took part in the episode “The Lion King” after a friend in the cake industry called and explained a situation.

The friend, who lived in Florida, was invited to be part of a crew that would be on the show, but when the filming days were scheduled, she found she couldn’t attend. By the time she contacted Humphrey, he was auditioning for a show on Netflix, so he wasn’t sure.

The Disney producers were interested in an interview with the team, so Humphrey took a leap of faith and went out of his way to join the team. He traveled to Florida to meet with whom he would work for the first time, on air, for Disney +.

“It was pretty intense on its own, which I’m sure you’ll see on the show,” Humphrey said.

Since taking ownership of his business, Humphrey has achieved many of his personal goals and appeared on television several times before “Foodtastic”. He has already participated in New Orleans for the “Christmas Cookie Challenge” in 2017, “Dallas Cakes” (a reality show filmed in his bakery in 2018) and “Cake Wars” in 2016 for Food Network. He also participated in “The Big Bake” for Food Network Canada, where his team won $ 10,000.

“It’s a bit surreal in a way. I don’t feel like I’m 27. I still feel like I’m just stepping out of high school, but honestly everything that God has put in place is just so crazy. My motto that I still live by is “It always works, it always works” and it does. I live my life day to day and take the opportunities that are offered to me and never look back, ”he said.

In total, Humphrey said he won around $ 20,000 in cooking or baking contests. Thanks to his accomplishments, Humphrey was able to put down a down payment for his first home and recently married his longtime partner.

For the past few years, Humphrey has taught baking classes at his Tyler bakery. He remembers a time when a student expressed interest in participating in cooking or baking contests as well. Humphrey’s immediate response was to encourage him. He contacted his connections with other shows he was on and connected his student to a casting director.

“I always encourage anyone to give it a try and you never know what might happen,” he said.

Today, Humphries is working toward his goal of opening a cake supply store in the Louisiana or Dallas area. Due to ongoing contractual restrictions with upcoming shows, he had to decline offers for “Halloween Wars” and “Christmas Cookie Challenge Championship”.

The episode “Foodtastic” is scheduled to air in October or early to mid-November. Rumor has it that part of the show may be lively.
