Before next week Mipcom, Banijay acquired worldwide rights to Argentine celebrity pageant series “The Hotel”, continuing its hugely successful relationship with Diego Guebel’s high-flying Boxfish in Argentina.
Produced by Boxfish for Canal 13, one of Argentina’s biggest free-to-air channels, “The Hotel” (“El Hotel”) sees 16 celebrity contestants holed up for four months in a luxury hotel on the outskirts of a town. Only downside: the luxury establishment does not employ any staff.
“While guests enjoy a luxurious stay in the pool, spa and live shows and savor gourmet dinners, staff are housed in the hotel’s service area, washing laundry, preparing breakfast- breakfast and meets all customer needs,” Banijay said on Saturday, announcing his acquisition.
The celebrities decide at the beginning of the week who are the “guests” and who become the “hotel staff”. At the end of the week, an elimination duel determines who leaves “The Hotel”, before the eventual winner wins what is described as a huge cash prize.
A playful take on the social chasm, humorously tackling a huge hot topic in Argentina and indeed the world, “The Hotel” will be presented to buyers at Mipcom in Cannes next week. Banijay will represent both the finished series and the format globally (excluding Argentina, Spain and Brazil). Banijay Rights will also sell the title to Mipcom.
“‘The Hotel’ is a colorful reality show featuring challenges with real celebrity danger, keeping everyone on the edge of their seat,” said Lucas Green, Global Head of Content Operations, Banijay, claiming that the series exemplifies the “incredible breadth” of Banijay’s multi-genre catalog of over 135,000 hours.
Led by famed former Cuatro Cabezas founder Guebel, producer of multi-format “CQC,” as of 2020, Boxfish produced three seasons of “MasterChef Celebrity,” a Banijay mega-format screening on ViacomCBS-owned Telefe, which has caught on prime time in Argentina. and social media by storm in the October 2020 premiere season. Boxfish Argentina’s makeover won three prestigious awards, including the Golden Martin Fierro for Best Program of the Year at the May 2022 Awards.
One of the fastest growing TV companies in Latin America, Boxfish currently develops and produces content for various streamers including Paramount+, HBOMax, Netflix and Amazon PrimeVideo. After opening offices not only in Buenos Aires but also in Madrid and São Paulo, Boxfish is expanding vigorously in Spain and Brazil. The three-part documentary series “Locomía”, a Movistar Plus+ original produced with Boxfish, proved Movistar Plus+’s biggest non-fiction hit in Spain so far in 2022 when it bowed out on the Spanish Pay-TV/SVOD player in June.
“The Hotel” joins Banijay’s list of market-leading titles at Mipcom. The highlights of the format take in “Starstruck“, “Blow Up”, “Love Triangle”, “The Biggest Karaoke in France” and “MasterChef: Young Talent”.
