Black Hills energy winter weather information

Important Safety and Energy Saving Reminders

Black Hills Energy is closely monitoring weather conditions and forecasts of a winter storm that is expected to impact Colorado and surrounding states. The operations teams of our electricity and natural gas business units are preparing for possible accumulations of ice, heavy snow and cold temperatures.

Updates, safety information and outage resources are available at www.blackhillsenergy.com/weather. Energy saving tips are available at www.blackhillsenergy.com/winter-ready.

Safety reminders

Electrical Safety: If you experience an unexpected outage in your home or business, please follow these guidelines to stay safe:

If your power is out, see if your neighbors have power. If so, check your home for blown fuses or a tripped circuit breaker. If your neighbors have no power or you can’t locate the problem, report the outage at www.blackhillsenergy.com/outages. If you see damaged outdoor electrical equipment, please contact us at 1-800-890-5554. Do not attempt to remove debris if it is on a power line or outside electrical equipment. If you are outdoors, never touch or try to pick up a downed power line. Assume that any downed power line is live. During an outage, unplug sensitive computer and electronic equipment or protect it with a high-quality surge protector.

Natural Gas Safety: Accumulation of snow and ice on your natural gas meter can create a safety hazard and even cut off the flow of natural gas to your heating equipment and other appliances. Please follow these guidelines to stay safe: Gently clear snow by hand or with a broom. Do not use a shovel, ice pick or other sharp tools, damage may result and make the situation worse.
Keep snow blowers and shovels away from gas meters and other above ground equipment.
Carefully remove snow from the outside vent on high efficiency furnaces. The furnace will not operate safely and efficiently if the vent is blocked.

Safely remove ice buildup from eaves that could fall and damage gas meters below.
Point out the meter and any other above-ground utility structure to anyone you hire for snow removal.
